Writing is Not Enough To Be Successful - Lulu Wang & The Purple Prose Award

Writers are a special kind of entrepreneurs in the sense that their work is not easy to separate from who they are.
Entrepreneurs need organizing talent so they can motivate others to fulfill activities, they need insight in markets and developments so they can time their approach and normally they have a special skill or specialized knowledge that serves as a drive.
For an author this special skill is writing. But to be successful they need more than that. An author that sells purely on bases of content is exceptional. The marketing of the book and the person behind the book is even so important.
Lulu Wang is a Dutch-Chinese author who writes popular literature.
In January of this year she won a price for writing the worst sex-scene. The price is an initiative to discourage the easy and free use of sex-scenes in literature and was called into existence by people who are offended by bad written prose. Internationally this would refer to a purple prose award.
Now about the person behind the prose. In an interview in Humo, where the team congratulated her with this price, Lulu responded quite pleased with: "Yes, I'm glad with the award. He that will not stop for a pin, will never be worth a pound." She replied with the additional comment that the sexual experience in China is completely different than that in Europe or in the Netherlands in this case. The discussion continued with these differences between "cheese" and "garlic" sex...
I've never read a book of Lulu, but I can now understand why her work is so wide spread, she is not only an author, but knows how to market herself and her work.
